Why can't we do what we say, and say what we mean?

Cultural change and leadership development

I have been fascinated by human behaviour my entire life. What is it that makes people so often not do what they say, and not say what they mean? How does it happen that people and organisations – even with the best of intentions – get stuck in patterns that they become incapable of freeing themselves from? What does it take when interpersonal trust is damaged, but you still need to move forward together?

Significant changes in organisations are typically accompanied by equally significant emotions. Frustrations, ambitions, the desire for recognition, hurt feelings, fear and anger – behind the scenes, their role is often a dominant one. As a facilitator, I work with teams and organisations where the interpersonal dynamic has become disruptive to the collaborative process. When that happens, it is crucial to understand and address the patterns 'in the undertow' of the organisation. Only then can the right interventions be found to re-align the organisation and begin the process of change.

A High-Performance Organisation demands a high level of psychological safety as well as clear behavioural and performance expectations. To develop the requisite culture in an organisation, I design cultural change programmes in partnership with leaders and organisations that are prepared to engage in an impactful conversation on behaviour. That isn't self-evident: it takes courage, self-reflection, and facing our own fears and insecurities. We will frequently work in the 'here-and-now', with the questions and emotions that emerge at that particular moment. It's a way of working that is exciting and sometimes a little uncomfortable, but visibly and palpably effective.

Personal coaching

Besides my work with teams and organisaties, I also offer personal coaching. This is a setting in which we explore the way your emotions and behaviour affect your work context, but also your personal life. You will learn more about your reflexes, patterns, motives, and emotions; how to deal with them and how to navigate them in interactions with others. That is a vulnerable and difficult process, and it will never cease to be – but engaging with it will enrich your entire life.
