The Human Effect | Saskia Pijs

“Daring greatly means the courage to be vulnerable, to ask for what you need, to talk about how you're feeling; to have the hard conversations.” – Brene Brown

During my career as a board-level IT manager, I directed a number of major reorganisations and (agile) transitions. I developed numerous change programmes, strategic plans and scorecards, but after 20 years I realised that the work had become unsatisfying to me. The leadership of (too) many organisations is driven by ego and power – often with destructive effects on the organisational culture, like burn-outs, stress, resentment and apathy. I saw the consequences of such corporate cultures all around me, and experienced them personally, as well.

That experience drove my desire to contribute to a more structural kind of change. Not just in the arena of strategy and vision, but also on the fundamental level of behaviour and interaction. Together with The Human Effect, I now help to build psychologically safe organisations governed by clear expectations and constructive collaboration. I coach and train both individual managers and teams to achieve that goal. My way of working is pragmatic, centred in the here-and-now, but always with the higher goals of the organisation in view.

I am easy to talk to, observant and precise, and often succeed at making an emotional impact on people in a single conversation. I believe a willingness to be vulnerable and to listen openly is essential to make behavioural change possible. That can be intimidating, but with a little courage and sense of humour, even sluggish and rusty organisations can become dynamic again. Let us build organisations without destructive intrigues, unnecessary bureaucracy and internal power struggles!
